‘Dexter’ Limited Series Will Serve as a “Second Finale” to the Original Ending

Following the announcement that Showtime‘s Dexter would return as a limited series, original series showrunner Clyde Phillips, who is slated to return alongside Michael C. Hall, says that the new series will “make right” by the original show’s polarizing finale.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV’s Top 5 Podcast, Phillips confirmed that the limited series will take place right after the season 8 finale of the original show. As such, the new series will not be re-writing the ending. It will instead serve as a “second finale” that is intended to “make [things] right” by the fans and Hall, who Phillips admits wasn’t “completely satisfied” by the original ending.

According to Uproxx, Phillips explained “This isn’t Dexter season nine… This was an opportunity to write a second finale for the show.” He went on to say:

“We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream. What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years. 10 years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very gracious about that.”

Dexter is slated to begin production next year and is slated to arrive in Fall 2021.
